Pollution control
Wastewater discharge and control
Some ways that the government controls water pollution include:
•
controlling pollution at source
•
providing adequate sewerage systems
•
collecting and treating sewage
The Environmental Pollution Control Act (EPCA) provides a comprehensive legislative framework for the control of environmental pollution in Singapore.
You can help control water pollution by:
•
treating industrial wastewater to the specified standards before discharging into a sewer or watercourse (if the public sewer is not available)
•
separating wastewater from industrial operations from domestic sewage and unpolluted water, and directing it to a wastewater treatment plant
•
not mixing domestic sewage and unpolluted water (condensate, boiler blowdown) with trade effluent. This will minimise the effluents subject to control
•
establishing a water monitoring programme to ensure compliance with discharge limits
•
using chemicals or processes that pollute less (eg biodegradable detergents)
•
regularly inspecting and maintaining wastewater treatment facilities
