Strategy for making best use of materials and resources
The 5-S Practice
Consider these five 'S's on the efficient management of materials and resources.
Sprucing-up
Reduce workplace clutter. Get rid of anything that is not required for the task at hand. This includes machinery, tools, consumables, trash, and equipment that is used elsewhere. Arrange often-used items close at hand, less-used items around the perimeter of the work area and seldom-used items in a central storage place.
Storage
Create storage systems that make things easy to find and to put away after use. Give clear visual information about what and how much is stored in a given spot. A good inventory helps keep track of materials before they expire.
Sanitisation
The key to understanding sanitisation is the equation: cleaning = checking. Rather than superficial cleaning, the process should include checking for such things as loose nuts and bolts, cracked gauges and overheated or malfunctioning equipment. Daily inspections should include taking immediate steps to remedy such abnormalities as soon as they are reported.
Standardisation
Standardisation refers to both what the normal condition should be, as well as how to correct an abnormal condition. Employees should know what the expected standard is. Communications on this subject should be easy to understand and constantly in sight.
Self-discipline
Training and discipline is the key to making the 5S system work. Each member of the team must know what is expected of them and constantly strive for compliance. Taking time to ensure that each employee receives the proper training is a good way of showing your team the importance of efficiently managing materials and resources.
